Hook Turn - Kickin' the B at 303

Hook Turn is a groovy organ trio playing funky originals that hit you in the head, the heart, the feet — and a few places in between. Think spinning Leslie cabinets, warbly tape delays, springy reverbs, and a pocket so deep you'll need a map to get out. Named after Melbourne's infamous intersection manoeuvre — where you swing left to turn right — Hook Turn takes the indirect route to the pocket, and that's exactly where they live. Featuring Adrian Whitehead on Hammond, Tim Nikolsky on guitar, and on the drum kit – Daniel Berry. Hook Turn’s influences come from the likes of Medeski Martin & Wood, Grant Green & Soulive. The result is punchy, robust, spicy, and just citrusy enough to keep you honest — music for people who nod their heads before they even realise they're doing it. Tix - $20 (CASH ONLY) on the door.

Gothic sounds: DYSTROPOLIS + MANKIND + WOLF ARROW RAIN

Mankind Soundscapes and Bar 303 present a night of Gothic sounds featuring a delectable selection from across the many sub-genres currently seeing a revival in Naarm/Melbourne.

DYSTROPOLIS bring the post-punk tinged, driving bass and jangling guitars of classic 80's goth and new wave.
Think: Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Cure

MANKIND is known for their energetic live performances and dynamic soundscapes featuring emotive vocals, melodic basslines, droning synths, and booming percussion.
Think: Jane's Addiction or Joy Division meets Type O Negative

WOLF ARROW RAIN's neo folk inspired music swings between melancholia to soothing lullabies.
Think: Florence in the Machine or a femme Jeff Martin

What do all these bands share in the sonic and visual realm?
Collectively, they are defined by a brooding, atmospheric sound, driven by deep basslines, reverb-heavy guitars, and melancholic or romantic themes. They share a distinct fashion and lyrical ideology that embraces macabre, melancholic and the darker side of life.

STOCK

STOCK play music as predictable and varied as Melbourne’s weather. This electrifiying quartet was formed in 2011 as a vehicle to workshop and perform Wilson’s original compositions. Formerly known as “B for Chicken” they have been performing regularly in Melbourne, developing material and refining the groups powerful, unified, interactive style. While the gentle, lyrical inclinations so evident in Wilson’s long-running trio (and the quartet which recorded This is Always) are still present, this project provides an outlet for the more explosive side of his musical personality. The band reference Ellington & Coltrane while leaning forward to embrace the 21st Century, with a nod to everything in between.

The inspiration for forming this band comes from the flexibility and drive of Hugh Harvey’s astoundingly musical drumming, Fermanis’ blues-drenched, rock-singed, take-no-prisoners guitar work, and the virtuosic beauty and creative flair of Chris Hale’s 6 string bass guitar poetry. Craig, Chris and Hugh are some of the busiest musicians in Melbourne, running their own projects, teaching, touring and recording with artists including The Cat Empire, The Meltdown, Gotye, the AAO & the MSO.

In 2018/2019 STOCK have been recording and producing their long overdue debut, assisted by a recording grant from the Australia Council for the Arts. Seizing the album as an opportunity to rebrand as STOCK they will be officially releasing the album early in 2020. It will be available on CD, as a High Definition 32bit digital download, and as a Collector’s Edition LP on Gold Vinyl presented in a gatefold cover featuring stunning art by Dale Cox.

Julien Wilson – tenor sax
Craig Fermanis – electric guitar
Chris Hale – bass guitar

Adaptive Radiation: Book Launch - Angela Hughes

Over the past five years, Melbourne artist Angela Hughes has been developing Adaptive Radiation, a project that began during the lockdowns with the creation of more than 800 mixed-media collages.

Borrowing its title from the evolutionary process in which species rapidly diversify to occupy new niches, Adaptive Radiation reflects on the equally strange and rapid ways people adapted to life. Humorous, surreal, and occasionally political, the works combine collage and drawing to explore the absurdities of a world that changed almost overnight.

This launch celebrates the release of a new artist book featuring 100 reworked collages from the series, alongside an exhibition of related works. Join us for a drink, browse the exhibition, and check out the books!

Thornback - Album Launch /w MATTHEW TRIPODI + RUBITA

After dropping debut track ‘Come, hold me’ in 2025 and the recent releases of her second and third singles 'Helen Scary’ and ‘Blur’, Thornback brings her highly-anticipated debut album ‘Asphodel Fields’ to Bar 303.

‘Asphodel Fields’ is an anthology comprising ten tracks which navigate the complexities of mental health challenges, love, loss and identity. The Naarm-based songstress, known for her vulnerable lyrics, layers harmonies and lush arrangements which mirror the mesmeric themes covered within her works.

Accompanied by her live band, Thornback performances feel as dark as they do vulnerable. Guitarist Harper Jobson, bassist Julia Marulli, drummer Matt Millsom and pianist Oliver Ryan support vocalist Isabella Votsis through idiosyncratic stage arrangements and their collectively lively presence.

Inspired by the musical stylings of Radiohead, Hayley Williams, The Cure, dodie and Angus and Julia Stone, Thornback seeks to tell stories that are brutally honest and true to her lived experience. While she doesn’t hope her music is relatable, she does hope that it resonates deeply with the people who can relate to it.

MATTHEW TRIPODI

Matthew Tripodi is a Geelong and Victoria based musician who has been making and composing music since 2018. His wide and eclectic array of songs reflects his passion for all kinds of genres, from rock and folk to blues and soul. The human experience is at the centre of all songs and the passionate lyricism and lived experiences drive home the emotional core behind each song. He believes music is something that connects us all and hopes that audiences can relate to or enjoy the songs and stories he shares.

RUBITA

Having studied electric guitar and songwriting at the University of Otago in Aotearoa, Rubita is the musical project of Rachel Kibblewhite. With soulful melodies inspired by friendship, working for the man and romance, Christian shares his Latino rhythms, Flynn delivers quirky basslines and Matt brings driving drum rhythms to create a truely unique and indie-pop-latino infused sound.

The Putbacks - Kickin' the B at 303

The Putbacks are Melbourne’s premier grit-and-soul ensemble. Established in 2007, the group has become the "stone-cold pro" backbone of the Australian soul scene, most notably through their multi-award-winning collaboration with Indigenous powerhouse Emma Donovan.

Comprising Mick Meagher (bass), Rory McDougall (drums), Tom Martin (guitar), and Simon Mavin (keys), the band specializes in raw, fluid, and razor-sharp funk that pays homage to the Stax and Atlantic traditions while maintaining a distinctly Naarm/Melbourne identity.

The Putbacks take their cues from the great house bands of the 60s and 70s soul studios - think of The MGs, The Meters and The Wrecking Crew, as well as film composers from David Axelrod to Adrian Younge and contemporary instrumental groups BADBADNOTGOOD and Khruangbin.
