Pinko Collective

Pinko Collective is a community organisation that aims to help build a strong community and support postive mental health. It does this by connecting people through music.

The goal is simple. Join us to watch or participate in one of our six weekly gatherings where local musicians, both accomplished and amateur, get up to showcase a small set of songs infront of a supportive audience.

It was born our of the Westgarth Idol - a fundraising event for Westgarth Primary - over 15 years ago and is made up of people who are both directly and indirectly linked to local school communities.

Got a song you've always wanted to sing?

As it's a collective, we have a bunch of willing collaborators for any song you may have in mind, so please contact us if you have something in mind you'd like to do?

We're not an open-mic, or a karaoke session, but if you have a direct or indirect link to members of the Collective, you can contact us to play! We particularly encourage women to put their hands up!

Our aim is to build social connection across the community using music as a means to gather together regularly.

Free entry.

Drop in for a pint or for a squiz of the live music.

Come and enjoy the loungey, Saturday arvo vibe! xxxx

Champagne Jacket single launch

Join Champagne Jacket in celebrating the long awaited release of "Slumbering", a dreamy song about the Brexit nightmare. With support from Gray Moyle, the night will be full of connection, optimism and hope, the Saturday before the UK goes to the polls.

Slumbering is the third release from Champagne Jacket's upcoming EP recorded with Gormie (of Angie McMahon). Indie disco banger “Sarah”, released in November 2023, repainted serotonin as “the one that got away”. Temporary, released in May, told the life story of a beach pebble. Now, in a response to a Boris Johnson’s speech about Brexit, “Slumbering” is a fable lamenting the fate of that giant woken unwisely.

Champagne Jacket will be supported by Gray Moyle who is smashing it with his awesome guitar skills and gravelly silk melodies on themes of nature, surfing, parenting, divorce and the grind of being human.

Tickets

Help launch “Slumbering” at @303thebar with @graymoylemusic and @o.vrnight on the 6th July. Get a discount on tickets with the code CHINATHRONE if buying in June!

The Hornstars sound is big, brassy and bold. The lineup is fronted by the charismatic Clancy Cullen a jazz-trained vocalist with undeniable stage presence. The horn section - Daniel Bardan (trumpet), Bruce Cousins (trombone), Russell B Myers (tenor sax) adds the sass and dance moves that only live horns can bring. The rhythm section - Joey Mount (drums), Mike Holloway (bass), Peter Bonett (keys), Gareth Durant (guitar) and Eric Morand (alto sax and percussion) drive the the funky beat. Each adds their own influences to the mix. Jazz, blues, soul, reggae - it may not all be funk as we know it, but it is definitely funky.

Dave Graney & Clare Moore: Their unique musical partnership has created over thirty albums. They are currently touring their new album ‘(strangely)(emotional)’. “A combination of the familiar tropes of rock and pop intermingled with literary lyrical explorations, jazz elements, ambient sounds, and a degree of abstraction masking astute commentary on the state of the world today. There are more ideas in these 15 songs than most artists achieve in their careers”. Bob Osborne – DIFFERENT NOISES – Salford UK

Songwriter, a musical story performance

Malcolm Hill & Live Flesh present, Songwriter. ‘Where do songs come from?’ A washed up songwriter Greg Smith starts receiving new songs from a mysterious source…..could it be Carole Kings’ great great great granddaughter??

Hariklia Heristanidis reads from my__daily__diary___ from Instagram. Hariklia is a writer and blogger. Her novella and short story collection, ‘All Windows Open’ was shortlisted for the 2013 NSW Premiers Literary Awards. Her popular Instagram page of diary excerpts, features encounters with rock stars and breathless gossip from historic gigs.

Singer, author, and impresario of local theatrical happenings, Malcolm Hill has nurtured his craft both as a soloist and as frontman of Buick KBT, touring with the likes of The Dead Kennedys, Coral Snakes, Conway Savage, People With Chairs Up Their Noses and Nick Cave

BASTARDIZER Simon Strong on vocals. Pumping out an irresistible energy Ekranoplans take the toxic trash beneath Melbourne’s streets and turn it into a party.

*********

The Live Flesh Rock Cabaret is based on the ‘variety shows’ Live Flesh staged regularly at Danes Magic Parlour in Brunswick and at the recent Musicians for Yes gigs - a mixture of band and solo /duo acts including other types of performers.

Malcolm Hill’s Live Flesh

Reviews - The third act was Malcolm Hill, best fucking band I’ve seen in ages. He’s toured with Nick Cave and is one of the last true Melbourne Bohemians. So there I was, in a red crushed velvet dress drunk out of my mind dancing like crazy on an empty floor in a Brunswick backstreet old venue. I fell in love with the guitarist’s Eastern solos over this dark blues -country sound. Best night ever.”

“You’d be hard pressed to find a more self generated artist who has made interesting work in both music and dramatic performance over a number of years. All his best work is full of palpable physical energy and the thrill of performance and creation.”

Dave Graney

This is a special one-off show not to be missed. Vinyls will be available for sale on the night.

Dune Castle Records Presents… “Trails”, a 7-track EP by Guitarist and composer Robbie Belchamber, which draws upon elements of jazz, brazilian, west african and folk music. The compositions are centered around the soft timbre of fingerstyle nylon-string guitar, with subtle arrangements incorporating voice, flute, percussion, mandolin, accordion and electric guitar filling out the texture.

Speaking on the record, Robbie said “During lockdown I spent a lot of time exploring Melbourne's northern waterways, riding my bike along the Birrarung, Darebin creek and Merri creek. These opportunities to slow down, reflect, observe and spend time in nature formed the genesis of many of the compositions. "Trails" captures these experiences, the bubbling rhythms of water, melodic inventions of currawongs and magpies, pervasive scents of the bush, all changing with the seasons.

"Trails" is Robbie's first studio record, and features contributions from Melbourne musicians Lucky Pereira (Glass Beams, 30/70), Hannah McKittrick, Grace Robinson (Empress), Moses Carr, Aidan Ryan (NoLess) and Erica Tuccerri.

Ivan is a vital and influential member of the music community in Naarm and brings a huge sound to their sets. Find out who the legend are that will be playing on the night and experience the once in a life time improv sound that will be made.

TUMI THE BE

Tumi The Be and Simmer Town present "TUMI THE BE '',The poetic, flow switching rapper brings a thought provoking selection of hip hop tracks in his debut, self-titled album "Tumi The Be".

“Tumi The Be'' has been an eight year journey, from recording tracks in friends’ closets to repping the chill vibes of Brunswick in “3056”, (the debut single from the album) to the thought provoking “Ocean Plastic” which takes a critical look at the millennial view of the world with a laid-back, sampled beat. “Woop Woop” which sees Tumi trying his hand at producing, looks at the balance Tumi is working to achieve in a world full of distractions "The Woop Woop is voodoo". Tumi is a dexterous, multilingual rapper, his sharp, progressive style is showcased on “Zwagala”, meaning to come here or come along in Tumi’s mother tongue Setswana.

Raised in Botswana listening to gangsta rap, Tumi related little to the lyrical content of his favourite rappers (Dr Dre, Xzibit and Jay-z) but the musicality and cadence of their raps (combined with a gentle nudge from his college sweetheart) inspired him to weave his thoughts, anxieties and experiences into hip hop. The playful boom bap rapper has carved out a sound which is steeped in rich musical, spiritual and poetic tradition, honing in his skills in curbside cyphers at Melbourne bar Horse Bazaar and on stage with many of Melbourne's hip hop legends.

LARRY CRESTANI

From the band Standing Circle and the Melbourne iconic Black Jesus Experience, Larry Crestani will perform some solo soundscapes improvisations with guitar and kraartar lifting the audience of BAR303 to a little journey somewhere through the distance, outside their shoes and chairs

TAMALA SHELTON

Tamala Shelton is a proud Bundjalung and Lama Lama actor, audiobook narrator, writer and spoken word artist based in Naarm (Melbourne). She has been working professionally in the creative arts industries for over 10 years and has recently begun her journey as a spoken word performer.

PARMINDER KAUR BHANDAL

is a visual artist, librarian, and poet who meditates on unblocking the heart chakra. Her art-making is imbued with love for oneself and others, compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. She gives space to intrinsic and deep truths that cannot be expressed in words, but rather prayers.

Re-centering peripheral bodies and disrupting traditional narratives around people and place, she utilizes forms of Photography, Video, and Installation to pay her respects to the community, history, country, and time that have generously nurtured her. Parminder believes that art is a gratitude ritual for life, and therefore she continues to advocate for the liberation of people and country from unsustainable and inhuman practices. Practices that separate country and people from their hearts.

We acknowledge that this event is being held on the sacred and stolen lands of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge sovereignty has never been ceded and stand in solidarity with all First Nations people worldwide who are feeling the ongoing effects of genocide and imperialism to this day.

No hatred, discrimination or sexual/ physical/ verbal assult will be tolerated. This is an all inclusive event that welcomes the LGBQT+ community and people of colour. If you are to experience this of any kind, PLEASE come to one of the event managers (probably Tyla) and we will ask these people to leave the premises IMMEDIATELY.

Barry/Sherlock/Fischer

Hailed by Loudmouth Magazine as “one of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers”, Barry’s work oscillates between contemporary jazz, musical theatre, free improvisation and art music. His recent album In The Waves features drummer Eric Harland (USA), and was praised by the Sydney Morning Herald as "...the finest instalment to date of the pianist’s bristling musical intelligence, rhythmic mutability, melodic flair and compositional gifts."

James Sherlock is one of Australia's most in-demand guitarists, regularly working with a host of local and international artists from Kate Ceberano, Megan Washington to Sheila Jordan, Cyrille Aimee, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Jon Riley (USA). The winner of the Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award, James has released six albums of original music and been praised by All About Jazz as "...a wonderful guitarist and a craftsman of songs possessing beauty and depth".

Danny Fischer is one of the most in demand and highly sought after freelance jazz drummers and educators currently working in Australia. There is scarcely a jazz musician in Australia that Danny has not worked with at one time or another.

Steve Barry - Hammond organ
James Sherlock - guitar
Danny Fischer - drums
